Abstract

1,000,998. Spinning yarns. E. BOBKOWICZ. May 21, 1963 [May 29, 1962], No. 20617/62. Headings D1F and D1W. [Also in Divisions B2 and B5] Textured filament yarn is made by extruding a layer of synthetic resin through an extrusion head, stretching the layer longitudinally to orientate the resin molecules, contacting the layer while soft on at least one side thereof with a fibrous web, pressing the layer and web together to form a composite web, slitting the composite web longitudinally into a plurality of ribbons, and twisting the ribbons into yarns. The yarn comprises a continuous core of synthetic resin surrounded by a sheath of fibrous material some portions of the fibrous material being embedded within the core, and other portions extending outwardly from the core, substantially free from resin. In a modification, the fibrous web is replaced, at least on one side of the resin layer, by a layer of paper, powdered pulp-like material, e.g. linters or paper pulp, or metallic foil. The resin layer may be extruded as a continuous film or as a plurality of parallel filaments. The fibrous web may be performed, or may be formed in situ by blowing staple fibres onto the tacky resin layer. The composite web may itself be bonded in the same way by a resin layer to a further fibrous web, to form e.g. a paper layer sandwiched between two resin layers with a fibrous layer on each outer side. After slitting into ribbons, the twisting operation is preferably carried out with application of pressure or heat and pressure to consolidate the ribbons. The resin may be any extrudable thermoplastic or thermosetting material e.g. nylon, polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene, a polyamide, polyacrylate, a cellulose ester such as cellulose acetate, regenerated cellulose, a polyester or a rubber compound. The fibrous web may be formed of e.g. wool, cotton, bast, remie jute, flax hemp or kenaf, sisal, sansiveria, agaive, glass fibres, asbestos fibres, or man-made fibres such as polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile. If the web is preformed, the fibres therein may be randomly or parallelly arranged. In one embodiment, a synthetic resin, melted in chamber 3, is extruded at 5 in the form of a layer 6. Devices 7 for producing aligned fibre webs, feed such webs 8, 9 by rollers 10, 11 on to opposite sides of layer 6. The web is bonded to layer 6 by passage between rollers 12 which are cooled and are rotating at a speed higher than the extrusion rate, to form a composite web or laminate 13, which then passes via guide 14 to slitter device 15. The resulting ribbons 16 are fed to twisting machine 17 containing spindles 18. Yarn packages 19 are deposited in pots 20.
