Abstract

1,007,436. Thermo-electric devices. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO. Ltd. Nov. 22, 1961 [Dec. 22, 1960], No. 44016/60. Heading H1K. A thermo-electric cooler unit consists of a plurality of assemblies in series each containing at least one pair of thermo-electrically opposite elements, the number of pairs of elements per assembly increasing in the direction away from the cooled end. In the exploded view shown in the Figure, the first assembly comprises P-type semi-conductor elements 22, 26 and N-type elements 20, 24 mounted on metallic sectors 32, 34, 36, connections being completed between 20, 22 and 24, 26 respectively by the diametrically split metallic disc 28, 30. The second assembly consists of P-type elements 40, 44, 48, 52 and N-type elements 38, 42, 46, 50, connections to them being completed by sectors 53, 58, 54. Connections between assemblies are effected over sectors 60, 62 and 32, 34. The two assemblies are electrically insulated but thermally connected by the thin disc 18. With + and - of the electrical source connected to sectors 70, 72 of the mounting for the second assembly it is seen that the current flows leftwardly through all the N-type elements and rightwardly through all the P-type elements so that heat flow occurs rightwardly throughout the assemblies. The increased number of elements in the second assembly compensates for heat developed in the ohmic parts of'the circuit. Since the assembly at the cold end may be small, the arrangement is suitable for cooling bodies the accessible parts of which are very small. Specification 978,332 is referred to.
