Abstract

1,204,884. Thermoelectric devices. ASSOCIATED ENG. Ltd. 14 Feb., 1968 [14 Feb., 1967], No. 7083/67. Heading H1K. A heat exchanger or heat sink 7 is connected thermally to a thermoelectric device comprising alternate P-type and N-type elements 1 by plasma- or otherwise flame-spraying an electrically insulating layer 5 of relatively high thermal conductivity on to the metal bridges 3, 4 conductively connecting the elements 1, plasma- or otherwise flame-spraying a metal layer 6 upon the layer 5 and bonding the heat exchange member 7 to the layer 6. In the preferred embodiment a thin molybdenum layer 3 is first sprayed on to the bismuth telluride elements 1 and a layer 4 of copper sprayed on to that. The insulating layer 5 may be of either zirconia or alumina and the layer 6 of either copper or nickel. The heat exchange member which may be made of a readily soldered metal or of aluminium having a surface covered with a layer of readily soldered metal is bonded to the layer 6 by a solder layer 8. The insulating layer 5 may alternatively be of a suitable ceramic or plastics material.
