Abstract
912,001. Thermo-electric devices. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Aug. 16, 1961 [Sept. 8, 1960], No. 29642/61. Class 37. A thermo-electric assembly comprises a generally egg-box shaped structure 4 of electrically and thermally insulating material having a plurality of open-ended compartments 6 extending from one side 5 to the opposite side 7 thereof, at least one thermo-electric element 8 disposed in each compartment 6, each of the elements 8 having two end faces 9 and 11 disposed substantially in the planes containing the sides 5 and 7 of the structure 4, electrically and thermally conductive means 10 joined to the end faces of the elements 8 in predetermined arrays to form hot junctions on side 7 and cold junctions on side 5, and a pair of heat-conductive plates 12 and 14 disposed in good thermal contact with the conductive means 10. The conductors 10, which may be either preformed straps or flame-sprayed layers of metal, may be attached directly to the ends of the thermoelectric elements 8 or, as shown, they may be attached to the heat-exchange plates 12 and 14 in a predetermined pattern. An electricallyinsulating layer, such as flame-sprayed alumina, is applied to the inner surfaces of plates 12 and 14, and a liquid may be circulated within the plates.
