Abstract

1,183,291. Semi-conductor devices. SIEMENS A.G. 14 Feb., 1968, No. 7337/68. Heading H1K. A pair of semi-conductor rectifiers 51, 52 is mounted in a space 21 between two bus-bars 11, 12 separated by an insulating spacer 2, with the anode of rectifier 51 contacting the bus-bar 11 and the cathode of rectifier 52 contacting the bus-bar 12. A contact member 3 situated between and electrically connecting the rectifiers has two arms 31, 32 which are urged against the contact faces of the respective rectifiers by a spring 4. As shown the faces 310, 320 of the arms 31, 32 may be convex to allow for slight adjustment of the angle between the contacting surfaces. Alternatively the faces 310, 320 may be planar and the corresponding contact faces on the rectifiers may be convex. The bus-bars 11, 12 are made of Al and are provided with cooling fins. In the embodiment three pairs of rectifiers are mounted, each pair being situated in an aperture 21 extending through the single insulating spacer. Part of each of the contact members 3 extends through a corresponding channel 22 in the spacer 2. The bus-bars 11, 12 are joined via an end flange (113, 123), Fig. 1 (not shown), on each bus-bar, which is bent over a corresponding protrusion (124, 114) on the other bar and spaced therefrom by an insulating member (62, 61). The bars are secured together by bolts, screws, rivets, &c. In other embodiments the contact member 3, Fig. 2, does not comprise a unitary structure as illustrated, each pair of rectifiers may have its own spacer 2, the inner surfaces of the bus-bars may be stepped so that each rectifier contacts the corresponding bar in a different plane, or each pair of rectifiers may be enclosed within the aperture 21 by sealing the spacer 2 to the bus-bars 11, 12 and by sealing the channel 22. Each rectifier such as 51 comprises a Si PN junction wafer held by pressure in a gas-tight housing between mutually insulated metal cover-plates. The cover-plates may be made of a ductile material, or a layer of such material may be provided between each plate and the wafer.
