A gas/liquid contacting column 2 comprises a plurality of vertically spaced superimposed trays 1 each having thereon a hollow chamber 4 comprising separate compartments each provided with an inlet and an outlet. A dipping jacket 7 surrounds the chamber 4, and the arrangement is such that liquid flowing down the column passes on each tray via the inlets and outlets through each compartment in turn. A partition 21 may separate the compartments, or two chamber components may be used. Fig. 5 (not shown) in one embodiment, liquid enters the chamber 4 via a depending pipe 6, passes through the opening 17 to the space between the chamber 4 and the jacket 7, which has a serrated lower edge which contacts the floor of the tray, re-enters the chamber 4 at 18, and passes via a pipe 11, the upper end of which forms a weir, to the next tray below. Gas flows upwardly along the wall 2, is deflected downwardly by the wall of the jacket 7, and enters the chamber 4 via the serrated edge. Various minor modifications are described. The pipes 6, 11 may be displaced from the openings 17, 18, see Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), whilst the openings 17, 18 may extend all (Fig. 2) or only partly up (Fig. 1) or down (Fig. 3, not shown) the walls of the chamber 4.
