1363137 Gas-liquid contacting apparatus MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 12 Aug 1971 [15 Aug 1970 3 Oct 1970] 38012/71 Heading B1R A gas liquid contacting apparatus comprises a vertical column having a series of spaced horizontal trays 12, each tray having a centrally positioned aperture 11, downcomers 16 extending between trays and a gas liquid contacting structure 13 supported by each tray and surrounding its central aperture and a cover 15 on each structure to prevent gas and liquid ascending therethrough. The structure comprises a perforated side wall 14 and is divided into two chambers A and B by a partition plate 17 at right angles to the direction of the flow of liquid across the tray. The downcomer 16 projects upwardly from the tray to maintain liquid on the tray at a predetermined depth, and the edge of the aperture 11 is formed in a sawteeth shape. In use, gas flowing up the column through the apertures carries liquid into the chamber A where contacting takes place and then into the chamber B to promote further contacting of the liquid. In a further embodiment the perforated side walls 14 of the structure 13 are secured to a cylindrical wall (19) mounted upon the tray, and which has slots (18) for the entry of liquids, Fig. 3, (not shown). A horizontal perforated plate (20) is suspended from the partition plate 17' to disperse the ascending gasliquid flow. In yet another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown) the perforated side walls are replaced by expanded metal side walls, the partition plate 17 is arranged parallel to the flow of liquid on the plates, and weir plates (21) are provided on the tray outside of the structure at right angles to the flow direction to prevent the liquid from flowing without entering the strucure. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown) the cover 15 is supported by stays (23) instead of side walls.
