Abstract
1,123,546. Contacting gases with liquids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 24 Feb., 1966 [26 Feb., 1965], No. 8285/66. Heading B1R. A tray 1 for contacting a gas with a liquid has one or more tubular elements 2 arranged over or in aperture (3) in the tray and wherein gas and liquid flow upwardly and are given a rotational movement by a vane-deck 3, the upper end of the or each tubular element being formed with one or more rows of inclined outlet passages 6 for escape of liquid and which extend in the direction of rotation imparted to the gas/liquid mixture. The outlet passages extend a height of at least 1/3 of the diameter of a tubular element and they may be formed over the entire circumference (as shown) of a tubular element or only a part thereof. In a modification the outlet passages are constituted by the openings in an expanded metal portion forming part of a tubular element and in another modification an inner co-axial sleeve of expanded-metal is arranged inside the tubular element above the vane-deck 3. The outlet passages 6 may discharge liquid into a collecting chamber surrounding the tubular element and the collected liquid discharge to below the tray. In a still further modification (Fig. 3) the or each tubular element is extended below the tray and gas enters through inclined slots 8, the vane-deck 3 in this case being omitted. Liquid is supplied from the tray to the extension via openings 4 and a pipe 9. In an apparatus comprising at least two trays the or each tubular element of one tray may be co-axial with the or a corresponding tubular element of an adjacent tray.
