Abstract

1,006,569. Web formation. ESTABLISSEMENTS REGINIER. June 7, 1962 [June 9, 1961; May 24,1962], No. 22085/62. Heading D1N. A web or sliver from a carding machine 9 is guided in an alternating to-and-fro motion parallel to the longitudinal axis of a receiving band 1, with the machine 9 being displaced normal to the to-andfro motion so that there is laid down on band 1 a strip of zig-zag superimposed formation. The carder 9 etc. and the lapping means are mounted on a carriage 3 which reciprocates along rails 6. The web, on leaving the doffer 12, passes up between conveyor belts 16,16a-which have tension adjusting means 21, 21a-on to a feeding belt 22 and between belts 25, and 25a which are oscillated to-and-fro by chain 37. As the carriage reciprocates and the belt 1 moves forward, a lap, Fig. 4 (not shown), of partly overlapping strips is formed with the fibres aligned almost parallel to the axis of the belt. At each edge of the lap there is a tapering "fall" which can be cut off and returned pneumatically to the carder, or preferably the apparatus is modified by the zig-zag strip being first laid down longitudinally on another conveyer belt 71, Fig. 6(not shown), which is situated transversely above band 1 and which feeds the strip on to belt 1 to form the lap. Rollers press the web on the belts 71 and 1 while further rollers strip the web from the belt 71. Chain 37 also drives through gearing which converts the oscillatory motion of the chain into unidirectional motion, all the rollers and belts of the lapping means-except belts 1 and 16,16a-so that the speed of the rollers and belts vary with the speed of the oscillatory motion of the lapping means.
