Abstract
1,004,971. Piston and piston rod packings. F. A. WELLSTEIN. Jan. 1, 1964 [Jan. 15, 1963], No. 83/64. Headings F2B and F2T. A packing ring 8 between a piston or piston rod 1 and a cylinder 2 is arranged in a circular groove 9 and has a gliding surface 11 which in the operative condition of the packing, Fig. 1, is cylindrical and in the stress-free condition of the packing is substantially conical, Fig. 2, or flat, Fig. 4, rounded edges being provided at the axial ends of the packing. The radial crosssection of the packing may be smaller than that of the groove 9 and the latter communicates with a cylinder end annular opening 10 having a radial width preferably greater than half the radial depth of the groove 9. A high pressure 0-ring packing 4 is arranged ahead of packing 8 and high pressure liquid leaking past the packing 4 collects in a groove 6 and is returned to the low pressure side of the liquid system via a channel 7.
