Abstract

841,275. Piston packings. A.C.F. INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 6, 1958 [June 30, 1958], No. 25161/58. Class 122 (1). [Also in Group XXVIII] A resilient packing-ring 69 located in a groove 68 formed in a piston 53 which operates in the cylinder 39 of a vacuum booster pump (see Group XXVIII), is arranged to have a sliding sealing fit in the cylinder and against the bottom of the groove and be free to slide in the groove relative to the piston. The packing-ring, which may be of oil-resistant synthetic rubber, is made from an extruded tube having a bore slightly less than the diameter of the bottom of the groove 68 and an outside diameter greater than the diameter of the cylinder. The tube is mounted on a mandrel having a diameter equal to the groove diameter so that the tube is expanded and grips the mandrel and is then ground or otherwise machined over its length in order to produce the diameter required for the desired sealing fit in the cylinder; the tube is then cut in a lathe into individual rings having a thickness less than the width of the groove and the rings removed from the mandrel. When a ring 69 is assembled in the piston groove it again takes up the required dimensions; if desired, a groove 72, Fig. 6, may be formed in the sealing surface of the ring in contact with the cylinder. The piston is formed from pressedsteel plates 55, 57 so shaped as to define between them the groove 68; the two rings are clamped by a nut (Fig. 2, not shown) against a shoulder formed on the piston-rod, a backing- plate 67 being positioned between the plate 57 and the shoulder.
