Abstract

1,004,856. Ferrite insulators. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Oct. 6, 1961 [April 4, 1961], No. 11977/61. Heading H1W. A device for the transmission of V.H.F. electromagnetic waves comprises an electrically and thermally conductive conduit 1 such as a hollow rectangular or circular waveguide or coaxial line, at least one ferrite body 2, e.g. an isolator, in good heat conducting relation with the interior surface of a wall of the conduit, and a plurality of members 3 of a material such as beryllium oxide which is of relatively high thermal conductivity, of low electrical conductivity and of low dielectric loss factor, the members 3 being also in good heat conducting relation with the interior surface of the wall of the conduit and at least one of the members 3 penetrating into the interior of the ferrite body so as to be in good thermal contact therewith, thereby providing heat conduction from the interior of the ferrite body to the wall of the conduit. The ferrite body 2 can be in direct contact with the interior surface of the wall of the conduit as shown or can be spaced from the interior surface by a dielectric member of good thermal conductivity such as beryllium oxide. There can be at least three members 3, 4 of beryllium oxide, at least one of the members extending through the ferrite body 2 so as to divide it into sub-bodies sandwiched between the members 3, 4. The parts 2, 3, 4 are stuck to one another and to the surface of the conduit 1 by a layer of adhesive of low electric conductivity, low dielectric loss and low thermal resistance and able to withstand high temperature, such as "Araldite" (Registered Trade Mark). Strips 5 of dielectric material of low loss and high permittivity, such as alumina or beryllium oxide, can also be provided. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 further strips 9 of beryllium oxide are stuck on the face of the composite ferrite body. The conduit 1 can be provided with a cooling water jacket or jackets 6 having inlet and outlet pipes 7.
