Abstract
1,233,636. Gyromagnetic devices. HAZELTINE CORP. 4 Sept., 1969 [24 Sept., 1968], No.43875/69. Heading H1W. Local coupling of e-m wave energy to a magnetic insulative material, e.g. YIG, is made by means of a thin conductive wire which traverses an aperture in a conductive member adjacent the surface of the material. As shown, one end face of a YIG element 10 is covered by a thin sheet 11 of copper foil having an aperture 12, the diameter 14 (or width) of which is substantially less than the free space wavelength of the energy to be coupled. A thin wire 21 traverses a diameter of the aperture and is connected at one end 23 to the conductive sheet 11 and at the other to the narrow (live) conductor 18 of a strip-line feeder 17, 18. The sheet 11 is connected to the ground plane conductor 17. Return current from the wire 21 flows along the surface of the copper sheet 11 remote from the face of the YIG element 10. The wire 21 is insulated from the sheet 11 by a thin sheet 24 of P.T.F.E. which may be partly removed in the region of the aperture 12<SP>1</SP>. Electromagnetic coupling is confined to the aperture region which therefore provides a point source. A modification is described in which the wire traverses the longitudinal axis of a rectangular slot. This provides a line source. In a further modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the end face of the YIG element abuts a block of conductive material provided with a groove the open side of which is bounded by the YIG material and provides the radiation aperture. The radiating wire runs along the groove which is filled with insulative material.
