Abstract
1,247,235. Impedance matching. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 29 Jan., 1969 [31 Jan., 1968], No. 4860/69. Heading H1W. An electromagnetic wave transducer includes a rectangular waveguide and a parallel conductor line having a strip conductor in parallel spaced relationship to at least one conductive ground plane, a portion of the waveguide coexisting with a portion of the conductive ground plane and of the strip in a transition region in which means is provided for shorting the strip to one of the broad waveguide walls, which walls are parallel to but offset from the conductive ground plane such that they do not lie in the plane determined by the ground plane. As shown, the waveguide 10 having walls 19, 20, 35 and 36 and end wall 21 is coupled to the strip line 11 composed of a centre conductor 12, as shown, formed by conductive material plated or printed on a strip of dielectric material 18- mounted between a pair of ground planes 16 and 17. Ground plane 16 terminates at end wall 21, while centre conductor 12 and the ground plane 17 extend for different distances into the waveguide, the edges of material 18 being supported on the lower wall 20 and in channels formed flush with wall 20 in the strip line portion of body 15, and the centre conductor being shorted to the upper wall 19 by spring- urged contact pin 22. The optimum relative dimensions, e.g. of offsets k, s, c and h, for impedance matching are discussed. Additional adjustment is provided by the use of a lumped reactance 41, and by adjustably capacitively coupling the latter conductor to the ground plane 17 by the screw 42. The arrangement permits the end-on connection of waveguides to printed and integrated circuit strip lines.
