Abstract
839,824. Interaction pumps. SCHMIDT, E. H. W. Aug. 12, 1958 [Aug. 12, 1957], No. 25873/58. Class 35. Current for an interaction pump is provided by a thermocouple 5, one side of the junction of which is dependent on the temperature of the metal being pumped while the other side is heated or cooled. The thermocouple consists of a plate 5, e.g. of constantan, either soldered at 4 to the duct which may be of the same material, or integral with it, and a copper connector 6 soldered to its remote end 7. The connector is taken through the air-gap and soldered at 8 to the other side of the duct. Instead of being of resistive metal, the duct 1 may be of insulating material, e.g. ceramic, in which case current electrodes 4, 8 are arranged as inserts, e.g. by diffusion through the ceramic. The connector 6 is termally insulated from the plate 5, e.g. by an air space 15 or insulating material. Connectors as 6 may pass above and below the duct, or may be replaced by conductors passing through open or closed slots in one or both pole-faces, or by loops passing on either side of the poles.
