Abstract

1,114,874. Thermocouples. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. 12 May, 1967, No. 34504/65. Heading H1K. A high temperature thermocouple comprises a junction between a pair of different noble metal conductors the ends of which are connected to compensating leads. As shown, Fig. 1, a thermocouple assembly for measuring the temperature of the gas inlet to a gas turbine engine comprises an element 16 of 50% Pt, 40% Pd, 10% Au forming a junction 20 with an element 18 of 65% Au, 35% Pd. The ends of elements 16 and 18 are butt welded at 22 and 28 to a chromel conductor 26 and a nickeliron-manganese conductor 24 respectively. Two such thermocouples are contained in a stainless steel sleeve 15 from which they are insulated by a magnesium oxide mass 13. The noble metal thermocouple produces the same EMF as a thermocouple formed from the conductors 24, 26 at 1300‹ F., and in order to compensate for the voltages generated at butt joints 22, 28 these joints are maintained at 1300‹ F. by placing the thermocouple assembly at an appropriate distance into the gas stream, in which there is a transverse temperature gradient. The insulation (23) surrounding the butt joints (22, 28) may comprise beryllium oxide, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the butt joints may be staggered, Fig. 4 (not shown) to ensure that they are at the same temperature.
