Abstract

1,037,049. Thermocouples. ENGLEHARDE INDUSTRIES Inc. Oct. 24, 1963 [Nov. 9, 1962], No. 42054/63. Heading H1K. In a high temperature thermocouple the operative hot junction between two high-nickel alloy members is hermetically sealed from the environment, but in heat conductive contact with it through a noble metal member. In a typical arrangement (Fig. 1) the brazed junction of a nickel-chromium alloy tube 12 and nickel-aluminium or nickel-silicon alloy wire 11 is protected by a thin cap of platinum-rhodium 15 hermetically sealed to the tube at 16 by brazing. Wire and tube are spaced by powdered magnesia which is compacted by differential contraction of the tube and wire following brazing. In an alternative assembly two thermocouple wires embedded in mineral oxide packing within a metal tube are bridged by a U-shaped member 25 of noble metal extending into the packing.
