Abstract
514,212. Wire resistances. WOOLNOUGH, G. L., WEBSTER, J. G., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. April 28, 1938, No. 12745. [Class 37] A resistance thermometer comprises a resistance element 1 embedded in pulverulent or granular refractory material 5 so as to be mechanically supported thereby around its entire peripheral surface and along the greater part of its length within a protective housing 6 through one end of which pass the leads 2, 3 to which the resistance element is welded. The resistance element 1 may be of platinum, nickel, molybdenum, or tungsten. Compensating leads 4 also pass through bores in the sheath 6, which is sealed at its end by a plug 7. The whole weight of the apparatus is taken by the leads 2, 3, 4 without damaging the element 1. The refractory material 5 may be alumina, beryllium oxide, magnesia, thoria or zirconia, which is tightly packed into the sheath 6 with bonding agents if desired. For use at high temperatures the resistance element and the refractory material in which it is embedded are maintained in an inert or reducing gas atmosphere within the protective sheath.
