Abstract

1,004,692. Liquid pressure engines. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. June 4, 1962 [March 3, 1961], No. 7774/61. Heading F1A. A hydraulic motor, e.g. for actuating a rock drill, comprises pistons 1 and 18 each actuating a valve controlling the reversal of movement of the other. In the embodiment shown, when working piston 1 is in its upper position, pressure liquid passes from an inlet 9 to the lower face of piston 18 via passages 8, 14, 16 and 17. Piston 18 moves upwardly to connect the upper end 4 of piston 1 to pressure via passages 26, 25, 29 and 13. The effective area of the upper end of piston 1 is greater than its lower end so piston 1 is moved downwardly. In the lower position of piston 1 the lower face of piston 18 is connected to exhaust via passages 17, 15, 11 and 12. Since the upper face of piston 18 is of smaller area than its lower face and is continuously connected to pressure via passage 26 and grooves 27, piston 18 is moved downwardly to connect upper end 4 of piston 1 to exhaust via passages 13, 29, 23, 24, 11 and 12. A spring-loaded piston 31, open to inlet 9, acts to reduce inlet pressure fluctuations. Portion 33 is provided on piston 1 to increase its mass.
