Abstract

1,004,160. Towable submersible vessels. J. A. RUDMAN. July 18, 1962, No. 27539/62. Headings B7A, B7M and B7V. A towable submerisble bulk transporter, e.g. for liquids, concerned in oil refinery and petrochemical installations, comprises a cylindrical mid-body having its plate strake thicknesses 1, 2 increasing from top to keel, and shaped end compartments fore and aft for buoyancy and altitude controlling purposes which connect to a source of air pressure on a towing vessel. The transporter has fins bore and aft to eliminate rolling, and housings which combine expansion domes, access hatches, sounding fittings and suction piping, to which masts for the release of gases and navigation lights may be fitted. The transporter has a towing attachment and a tow line which carries air and instrument leads to and from the towing vessel. A pressure responsive valve can open the fore and aft compartments to a source of compressed air carried by the transporter to render it buoyant if the tow-line breaks. The transporter may have sea water cooled condensers when used for transporting liquified gases. An adjustable rudder is described for keeping the transporter on station when being towed in a group.
