Abstract
1,003,154. Laundry bags. J. HELINGOE, and JOSEPH HELINGOE. Dec. 4, 1962 [Feb. 6, 1962], No. 4456/62. Heading B8K. [Also in Division B5] A laundry bag has at least one side closed by water-soluble stitching to permit automatic release of the contents in the washing machine. The bag may be made from a continuous strip of polythene tubing which is welded transversely at spaced intervals and has perforations adjacent to the welds to be torn to separate the bags. One edge of the tube is slit and subsequently seamed with water-soluble thread either before or after separating the bags. Alternatively, the bag may be seamed on all three sides with the water-soluble thread. The seams may be formed by two threads, a cotton thread 5 (Fig. 2) together with a water-soluble thread 6 such as a filamentary alginate. Alternatively, the soluble thread may be a spun yarn in which the soluble fibre is mixed with an insoluble fibre for strengthening. The bag may be tied, after filling with soiled articles, with a water-soluble thread or a rubber band. The bag may be used as a liner for a bin with the mouth supported in an open position.
