Abstract
Non-aqueous polymer dispersions are made by polymerizing an ethylenic monomer charge in a hydrocarbon medium in which the resulting polymer is insoluble and which consists of at least 51% of aliphatic hydrocarbon, the medium having dissolved therein a drying oil-modified polyester. The Examples describe the polymerization of: (1) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and acrylic acid, (2) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile, (3) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and methacrylamide, (4) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and isobutyl methacrylate, (5) ethyl acrylate, vinyl chloride and acrylic acid, (6) ethyl acrylate, styrene and acrylic acid, (7) vinyl acetate, (8) methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate, and (9) methyl methacrylate ethyl acrylate and acrylic acid, in hydrocarbon media containing polyesters modified by soyabean oil, linseed oil fatty acids, dehydrated castor oil and safflower oil. The polymer dispersions are used in coating a variety of substrates.ALSO:Surfaces of wood, metal, concrete, vinyl tiles, and other similar materials are coated by applying thereto non-aqueous polymer dispersions made by polymerizing a monomer charge in a hydrocarbon medium in which the resulting polymer is insoluble, and which contains dissolved therein a drying oil-modified polyester (see Division C3). The examples describe: (1) glass and metal coated with a dispersion of a methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer containing a soyabean modified alkyd resin, (2) steel panels sprayed with, and copper wire dipped in, a dispersion of a methyl methacrylate / ethyl acrylate / acrylonitrile copolymer containing a dehydrated castor oil modified alkyd resin, (3) steel, aluminium, glass and wood brushed with a dispersion of a methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/methacrylamide copolymer containing a linseed oil-modified alkyd resin, (4) maple and yellow pine brushed with two coats of a dispersion of a methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/isobutyl methacrylate copolymer containing a safflower oil-modified alkyd resin, and (6) red cedar with a dispersion of an ethyl acrylate/styrene/acrylic acid copolymer containing a linseed oil-modified alkyd resin.
