Abstract

Metal articles e.g. steel panels are coated by immersing them in an aqueous coating composition containing an organic film-forming material and having a viscosity of less than 30 centipoises at 25 DEG C., and passing an electric current between the article and another electrode. Preferably the dispersed or dissolved solids content of the composition is 5-30% by weight. The composition may be pigmented, e.g. with red iron oxide, in the volume ratio of no more than 1:4 of pigment to filmforming material which may be a copolymer of butadiene/styrene or methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride or acetate/2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, an ester of dehydrated castor oil fatty acids with epoxide resin, an alkyd resin such as trimellatic anhydride resin, a coconut oil-modified resin, an acrylic resin e.g. copolymers of ethyl or butyl acrylate/acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid/acrylamide or styrene, or a maleinised oil such as linseed or tung oil. After air drying, the coated articles may be stoved at 165 DEG C.
