Abstract

1306764 Coatings REICHHOLD-ALBERTCHEMIE AG 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970 (2)] 24197/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Stoving lacquers and one-coat lacquers comprise solutions of novel inter-polymers derived from (a) 15-65 wt. % styrene; (b) 2-12 wt. % of hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate; (c) 1-3 wt. % of acrylic or methacrylic acid; (d) 12-30 wt. % of an ether formed from a C 1-8 saturated alkanol and N-methylol acrylamide or N-methylol methacrylamide; (e) 10-55 wt. % of an ester of a C 1-10 saturated alkanol with acrylic or methacrylic acid, or a mixture of such esters; and (f) 2-15 wt. % of polypropylene glycol esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, said esters containing 4-8 propylene glycol units and having hydroxyl numbers of 100-200; the sum of (a) to (f) being 100%. The lacquers are particularly useful for coating articles formed from iron, aluminium, magnesium or alloys thereof, particularly articles formed from sheet metal, e.g. car bodies, ships, washing machines, refrigerators, cans, jugs, tubs and household and industrial instruments. The stoving lacquers may form primer coats or top coats. An exemplified stoving lacquer, which is applied to both untreated and zincphosphatised steel sheet, comprises the polymer, TiO 2 , ethylene glycol monoethyl ether monoacetate, and a mixture of xylene and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether as solvent; and may contain an alkyd resin in a ratio of polymer to alkyd in the range 90:10-10:90, exemplified alkyds being derived from dehydrated castor oil, phthalic anhydride and either glycerol or trimethylol propane. An exemplified one-coat lacquer comprises the polymer, an epoxy resin, TiO 2 , xylene, "Solvesso" (Trade Mark), butanol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether monoacetate, a silicone oil and "Bentone-34" (Trade Mark).
