Abstract

1463490 Acrylic polymer coatings IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973] 45094/73 Heading B2E A protective and decorative coating, e.g. a metallic coating for a car body is applied to a substrate by (i) applying a base coat comprising a film forming, optionally tremosetting, acrylic polymer and a cellulose ester both carried in a volatile organic liquid, the cellulose ester constituting 2% to 70% of the combined weight of the acrylic polymer and the cellulose ester, together with one or more pigments and optionally a heat-curable crosslinking agent for the base-coat polymer, (ii) drying the base coat without stoving, (iii) applying an unpigmented top coat to the base coat, the top coat comprising a stable dispersion of a thermosetting acrylic polymer in a volatile organic liquid in which the polymer is insoluble, together with a heat curable crosslinking agent, for the thermosetting polymer and (iv) curing the coated substrate. A preferred cellulose ester is cellulose acetate butyrate. Suitable pigments include aluminium flake, copper bronze flake, red and yellow iron oxides, metal chromates, phthalocyanine blue, phthalocyanine green, dioxazine violet and mineral or vegetable carbon black. Acrylic polymers used are polymers or copolymers of one or more alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acids, optionally together with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers such as vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile or styrene. Suitable esters include methyl and butyl methacrylates, ethyl and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates. Suitable co-monomers include acrylic and methacrylic acids, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 2- hydroxypropylacrylate and 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate. Suitable cross linking agents include melamine formaldehyde resins which may be partially etherified with butanol.
