Abstract
A non-aqueous graft polymer composition is obtained by polymerizing a mono-ehtylenically unsaturated monomer charge containing at least one compound containing a <FORM:1007723/C3/1> group in a liquid hydrocarbon medium which (1) is composed of one or more aliphatic hydrocarbons and not more than 49% by weight of non-aliphatic hydrocarbons and (2) has dissolved therein at least 1% by weight of a mixture of (a) a drying oil-modified fusible thermoplastic polyester condensate or such a condensate further modified by copolymerization with at least one monoethylenically unsaturated polar monomer having a <FORM:1007723/C3/2> group and a carboxyl, alcoholic hydroxyl, amine or amide group and (b) an acrylic ester polymer containing at least 50% by weight of acrylate and/or methacrylate units. The polymerization results in polymer particles stably disposed in the hydrocarbon medium and having particle sizes ranging from about 0.1 to 2 microns. The polymer may contain as much as 50% of the alkyd(acrylic polymer mixture. The acrylic ester polymer may also contain units from at least one polar monomer as defined above, may be grafted on. Preferably the mixture of (a) and (b) is prepared by polymerization of at least one polar monomer in a medium containing a mixture of a drying oil-modified fusible thermoplastic polyester and an acrylic ester polymer. The oil modified polyester condensates are prepared by conventional methods. The monomer charges used in the examples are ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate (Example 1), n-butyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate (Example 2), methyl acrylate (Example 3), acrylonitrile, ethyl acrylate (Example 4), ethyl acrylate, styrene methyl methacrylate (Example 5), vinylidene chloride, ethyl acrylate (Example 7), vinyl toluene, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate (Example 8).ALSO:A non-aqueous graft polymer composition which is used as a coating for wood, glass paper cardboard, leather, aluminium, steel, ceramic, concrete, bricks, plaster, asphalt, vinyl resin tiles, linoleum, asbestos, cement siding and shingles, textile fabrics is obtained by polymerizing a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer charge containing at least one compound containing a CH2=C< group in a liquid hydrocarbon medium which (1) is composed of one or more aliphatic hydrocarbons and not more than 49% by wt. of non-aliphatic hydrocarbons and (2) has dissolved therein at least 1% by wt. of a mixture of (a) a drying oil-modified fusible thermoplastic polyester condensate or such a condensate further modified by copolymerization with at least one monoethylenically unsaturated polar monomer having a CH2=C< group and a carboxyl, alcoholic hydroxy, amine or amide group and (b) an acrylic ester polymer containing at least 50% by weight of acrylate and/or methacrylate units. The polymerization results in polymer particles stably dispersed in the hydrocarbon medium and having particle sizes ranging from about 0,1 to 2 microns. The minimum film-forming temperature of the composition may vary from about -40 DEG C. to 150 DEG C. The coating may be applied by brushing, spraying or rolling and may be air-dried or baked.
