Abstract

1,001,542. Drop-delivering containers and stoppers therefor. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. Oct. 16, 1961 [Aug. 2, 1961], No. 37029/61. Headings B8D, B8N and B8T. A moulded drop-delivering container 10 comprises a squeeze tube 11 of an elastic plastics material, closed at the bottom end 15 and provided with an integral cylindrical neck 17, which serves as a spout, and a transverse puncturable diaphragm 20 closing the tube 11 at the inner end of the neck 17, together with a protective twist and thrust cap 12, preferably of a rigid plastics material, having a tubular skirt 22, depending from a head 21, which telescopes down over the outer end of the neck 17, and a plugging element 24 depending coaxially within the skirt 22 from the head 21 and having a sharp inner end 26 within the neck 17 and spaced from the diaphragm 20. The cap 12 may be forced into the neck 17 until the sharp end 26 punctures the diaphragm 20 so that, on removal of the cap 12, the contents may be squeezed out of the tube 11 drop by drop. The plugging element 24 has an outer diameter slightly greater than the internal diameter of the neck 17 to provide a fluid-tight seal which prevents contamination. For further protection an annular bead may be formed integrally with the neck 17 or with the skirt 22 in the mouth of the recess 25 defined by the skirt 22 and the plugging element 24. A cavity 35 reduces the amount of material used. A stiffening rod may be embedded coaxially in the tapered point 26. A truncated conical section of greater diameter than the plugging element 24 may be provided at the base thereof to seal the mouth of the neck 17 when the cap is thrust forward.
