Abstract

Foamed polyurethanes may be manufactured by the reaction of an organic polyisocyanate with an organic polyhydroxy compound in the presence of an inert liquid having a boiling point of 30 DEG to 120 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure, the temperature of the reaction mixture at the start of the reaction being higher than the ambient temperature. Suitable inert liquids are methylene chloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,1,2 - trichloro - 1,2,2 - trifluoroethane and trichloroethylene. In the examples, the organic polyisocyanate 18 and 80/20 mixture of tolylene 2 : 4- and 2 : 6-diisocyanates and the organic polyhydroxy compound is a glycerol/propylene oxide condensate. Heating by microwaves is particularly convenient.
