Une planche d'échafaudage est constituée d'un plateau de forme générale rectangulaire, portant sur chacune de ses largeurs un embout muni de deux crochets. La planche d'échafaudage est disposée entre deux tubes horizontaux d'un échafaudage métallique, les crochets d'un embout étant appliqués sur l'un des tubes, et ceux de l'autre embout étant appliqués sur l'autre tube. Usuellement, le plateau d'échafaudage est réalisé à partir d'une tôle, constituant le dessus du plateau munie d'aspérités dans sa zone centrale longitudinale, et dont les bords io longitudinaux sont repliés à 90 pour constituer des faces latérales planes, puis sont repliés de nouveau à 90 pour constituer des surfaces parallèles au dessus du plateau, jouant le rôle de surfaces d'appui lors de l'empilage des planches, soit pour le stockage, soit pour le transport. En coupe transversale, les plateaux présentent un profil en C. Lors de l'empilage des planches d'échafaudage, les surfaces d'appui de la planche supérieure reposent sur le dessus du plateau de la planche inférieure, au voisinage de ses bords longitudinaux, dans une zone sans aspérités. Il en résulte qu'en cas de sollicitation transversale, par exemple en cours de transport, il se produit un glissement qui peut entraîner une rupture d'équilibre de la pile de planches.
