Abstract

The self steering axle for a vehicle semi-trailer with multiple axles, has the wheel stub axles (1) mounted on cranks carried by the main axle. The main axle is mounted on pivotal supports (4) which can rotate through 180 degrees, so that the cranks always follow the direction of movement of the trailer. The steering gear for the axle is controlled by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders (6) which rotate the cranks so that the wheel axles are not coaxial with main axles, under high loads. The cylinders are connected at one end to a lever on the main axles.

Description

The present invention relates to a self-steering axle device for agrarian or road semi-trailer.

The increasingly heavy loads transported on the semi-trailers force the mounting of several axles, either bogie, tandem or tridem and, if at least one of the axles is not steerable, a shifting is produced causing stresses excessive on axles and tires, while deteriorating the ground surface.

The steerable axle, already used on some trailers, only works in forward gear. I1 is self-tacking and is oriented in the direction of travel of the vehicle (system called "wheel-chair"), while according to the invention, the east is self-tacking in forward and reverse.

The principle consists in pivoting the axle of 1800, so that the articulated rods of the rockets can be reversed and thus always oriented according to the direction of the trailer.

This reversal of the axle is obtained by mounting the body on journal bearings so that it can pivot.

The control of this maneuver is obtained using one or more pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders. The completion of this pivoting is obtained by the weight of the vehicle on the axle, the spindles of all the axes being offset with respect to the axle body.

The control jack is articulated at the free end of a lever arm secured to the axle body, said end being provided with a light allowing the jack, at the end of the stroke and after having made exceed the center of gravity , between the axis of the axle body and the axis of the wheel knuckles, to release its fulcrum so that the reversal at 1800 ends.

In the following description, the lever is in the form of a sector in which the light is formed by a mortise centered on the axis of the axle body, the axis of the rod of the double-acting cylinder is then in place, in contact, opposite the mortise to accomplish the reverse movement.

The following description of the present invention, given by way of example, makes it possible to understand the principle thereof.

On the body of the pivoting axle, since it is mounted on bearings "4 ', 2 sectors" 5 "are set up intended to cause the axle to turn under the pressure of the jack" 6 ".

It will be noted that the sectors are made with mortises, so that the jack has to cause by its stroke only a displacement of 1000 of pivoting of the axle, then, the pivoting at 1800 is completed by the inertia of the weight of the vehicle, the rocket "1" having exceeded the axis of the axle body.

The rod of the jack "6", connected to the sectors by the axis "7", slides at the end of the race in the mortises of the sectors, ready and in place to remake the slack in the opposite vein, the jack being of course double-acting.

- les figures (3) et (4) montrent l'essieu inversé sous la pression du vérin, pendant une partie du cycle, puis à fond de course, laissant l'essieu poursuivre son retournement.- Figures (3) and (4) show the axle inverted under the pressure of the jack, during part of the cycle, then at full travel, letting the axle continue its reversal.

- la figure (5) montre, en trait plein, l'essieu dans sa position initiale et, en trait pointillé, la deuxième position qu'il peut prendre.- Figure (5) shows, in solid lines, the axle in its initial position and, in dotted lines, the second position it can take.

Also appears in this figure, the horizontal arrangement of the jack "6" above the plane defined by the axle in its two extreme positions, so that it is in abutment on one of the ends of the mortise, forming thus an angle between the axis of the jack "6" and the direction defined by the center of the axle ")" and the axis "7" closest to an angle of 900, to reduce the effort.

The position of the jack above the axle is not limiting, but only preferable for reasons of space.
