Abstract

Spiked brushes are made by using a prefabricated insert (6) to locate a set of spikes (P) within a mould for producing an injection moulded handle (A). The insert has a grid profile to allow the moulding material to more readily flood the cavity and envelope the insert. The passages through parts of the insert for accepting the spikes are a tight fit for the spikes, to exclude the moulding material, pref. pass through individual bosses in the grid. Loading of the insert with a set of spikes can be independent of the injection moulding tool, to minimise the injection moulding cycle. The insert material can be selected for e.g. high strength and low mass, the subsequent moulding material for appearance and feel.
