Abstract

The flexible sleeve (1) is used to make an end to end connection of co-axial lengths (5,6) of exhaust pipe, housing onto the two ends to be secured by welding (7). It (1) may be of stainless steel, having a single circumferential undulation (4) at mid length, and accommodating the minimum practicable gap (8) between pipe ends. The undulation (4) is external and the sleeve wall thickness reduces progressively towards the peak (P). The ratio of minimum to maximum wall thickness is between one half and one quarter and the sleeve steel may be of weldable grades (e.g. Z 10 CN 10 - 09).

Description

The present invention relates to a flexible seal intended for the sealed connection of two elements of a pipe, in particular an exhaust pipe on a motor vehicle.

On a motor vehicle with a combustion engine placed at the front, the exhaust line, which is almost the entire length of the vehicle, contributes to a large extent, due to the vibrations to which it is subjected, to create a certain feeling of discomfort for passengers, mainly when the engine is idling.

These vibrations also create fatigue stresses which are all the greater, on the exhaust line, as the engine is carried by more flexible supports.

It is therefore necessary to interpose a flexible element in the exhaust line, between a section connected to the engine and the main section located downstream.

For this, it has already been proposed to use a flexible section consisting of a metal wall with parallel undulations forming a sort of bellows. Unfortunately, these hoses are subjected to complex deformations, as well as to high temperatures, which leads to their rapid destruction, unless resorting to very elaborate embodiments, therefore very costly.

This is why, in practice, rather use is made of seals formed by two complementary elements of ball joint tightened by elastic means. But these joints are often noisy and prone to blockage. In addition, it is difficult to make them waterproof and above all to keep them waterproof, which can cause re-entry of air which distorts the indications of the oxygen detectors which are placed, in certain cases, in ducts. exhaust to adjust the richness of the mixture introduced into the engine.

The object of the invention is to provide a particularly simple and inexpensive solution for producing a flexible junction between two elements of a pipe, this junction being perfectly sealed and having no friction surfaces, which guarantees the absence of noise and the impossibility of blocking.

The flexible joint according to the invention, intended to connect two sections of pipe, consists of two cylindrical sleeves connected by a bead of revolution, each sleeve being mounted and welded on one of the sections.

This joint is characterized in that the bead has a thickness which decreases progressively from each of the sleeves towards the zone of larger diameter, the spacing between the two sections of pipe being limited to the minimum compatible with the deflections provided during use. .

An exemplary embodiment of the invention is the subject of the description which follows, with reference to FIG.

unique jointe qui représente une coupe axiale à travers un joint suivant l'invention.single joint which represents an axial section through a joint according to the invention.

This seal 1 is formed by two cylindrical sleeves 2,3 coaxial, connected by a bead 4. The sleeves have a constant thickness, while the bead has a thickness which decreases progressively from each of the sleeves towards the zone of larger diameter . The ratio between the minimum thickness and the maximum thickness can be between 1/2 and 1/4.

Each sleeve is fitted onto the end of a section of piping 5, 6 and secured by a weld 7.

The clearance 8 between the ends of the sections 5.6 is limited to the minimum compatible with the angular and longitudinal deflections provided during use.

The seal 1 is made, for example, of weldable stainless steel such as steel Z 10 CN 18-09 (NF A 35572).

A joint thus produced responds well to the goal that we had set: it is completely waterproof, it has no rubbing surface so it is not noisy and does not risk being blocked. Finally, it has good flexibility, due to the thinning of its thickness. As the area where this thinning is located is the furthest from the pipe sections, and apart from the flow of gases, it undergoes a relatively moderate temperature rise, which gives the joint good resistance over time.
