Abstract

The Al alloy is composed of 1-10 wt.% Ca, 3-20 wt.% Si, balance Al and usual impurities and is used for the deoxidation of steel in place of Al alone. Method avoids the formation of Al oxide striations in the steel and reduces the wear of cutting tools associated with hard Al oxide inclusions. In an example, a series of 18 melts composed of 41Cr4 steel, for the prodn. of drop-forged vehicle components, were filled into a 70t ladle. The melts were deoxidised by adding 0.7 kg./t. Al alloy of compsn. 1.8% Ca, l% Si, balance Al. The melt had a lower O content than is usual and according to Standard VDEh 1570/71 the K4 value lies below 10 in 93% of the samples taken.
