Abstract
The cell is formed from two half cells. The half cells (52, 50) have electrodes and lines on a clear substrate (10). The electrode segments present in the display panel have a first surface coating which effects a first homogeneous orientation of the liquid-crystal substances. The remaining surface of the substrate (10) and of the lines is covered with a second orienting layer, the directions of orientation of the first and second orienting surface coatings being at an angle to one another. A polariser (60) is added to the cell for the purpose of forming a liquid-crystal display. It is possible by means of this cell to achieve a coloured display in front of an essentially colourless background.
