Abstract

The ignition system uses a beam of pulsed radiation focussed at a point inside the combustion chamber and having a frequency selected for the absorption characteristics of the fuel being ignited. The beam enters the combustion chamber from the outside at a relatively low intensity. Lenses then focus the beam. The radiation source is a pulsed laser. If the fuel is isopropyl nitrate or a liquid fuel with similar absorption characteristics then a ruby laser is used with an optical device to double its wavelength. The condenser lens (18) has a refractive index roughly equal to that of the fuel.
