Abstract

[Also in Division G2] In a photo-cauterizing apparatus including a coherent light source provided with an output beam focuser an auxiliary non-coherent light source is provided to pass light through the coherent light source along the direction of the output beam so that the plane in which the output beam is focused may be determined without activation of the coherent light source. Light from one end of an optically pumped ruby rod laser is focused by means of two convex lenses and a prism on to the retina of an eye and for setting up purposes an auxiliary non-coherent light source and condenser lens system is situated at the other end of the rod. Prior to activation of the helical flash tube surrounding the laser rod the auxiliary source is activated and the convex lens further from the one end of the rod is moved until the light is focused on to the required spot of the retina. General viewing of the eye is provided by means of an apertured mirror arranged at an angle at the focus of the convex lens nearer to the one end of the rod which mirror has light shone upon it from a second non-coherent light source. The appropriate energy level of the laser beam is then chosen by means of a series of different filters or apertures carried on a disc next to the one end of the rod and finally the laser is activated to produce a coherent light beam focused at the required spot.
