ACCORDING TO THE INVENTION A CAPACITIVE DETECTOR IS PLACED IN CONTACT WITH THE ELECTRICAL BODY AND MOVED IN CROSS DIRECTION THEREOF; THE DETECTOR, WHICH INCLUDES AN ELECTRODE IN CONTACT WITH THE SHEET, DETERMINES THE FREQUENCY OF AN OSCILLATOR WHOSE SIGNAL IS COMPARED WITH A REFERENCE FREQUENCY TO OBTAIN A SIGNAL PROPORTIONAL TO THE THICKNESS OF THE DIELECTRIC BODY; THE SECOND OSCILLATOR IS PERIODICALLY RECALIBRATED BY COMPARING ITS FREQUENCY WITH THAT OF THE FIRST OSCILLATOR, WHEN THE latter IS OUT OF CONTACT WITH THE DIELECTRIC MATERIAL, AND BY ADJUSTING THE FREQUENCY IF NECESSARY.
