Abstract

The efficiency of a heat exchanger can be increased by creating turbulent flow in one of the gases. Turbulent flow is induced in the gas stream (6) by a row of tubes (1, 2) with longitudinal slots (3, 4) in the walls. The tubes (1, 2) are connected by a pipe (5). As the gas (6) flows between the tubes (1, 2) the effect of the slots (3, 4) is to deflect the gas stream around the walls of the tubes (1, 2) and so create a turbulent flow before the gas enters the heat exchanger. The tubes (1, 2) may be of elliptical cross-section or circular.
