Abstract

The stopper may be fixed on other vessels, and has a metal frame contg. a stationary refractory stopper plate (I) contg. a hole. Below plate (I) is a sliding, refractory stopper plate (II) in a moving metal frame. Plate (II) possesses two holes, one of which is used to blow pressurised gas into the hole in plate (I) when the stopper is closed. The gas is used to prevent molten metal solidifying in the stopper. The gas is fed to plate (II) via a controller which does not have an external adjusting device but contains a small hole controlling the gas flow independently of the gas pressure (Pa) downstream of the hole. In one of several pref. controllers, gas at an initial pressure (Pg) flows through a filter to a small hole contg. a needle valve adjusted by a screwdriver and then held by a lock nut. Used to obtain a constant flow of gas into the hole in the sliding plate (II). By using the small hole, the gas flow to the stopper remains constant if Pa does not exceed a critical value (Pc) which is usually 50-70% of the initial pressure (Pg).
