Abstract

The appts. consists of a chamber contg. a hole at each end fro the location of a tube (6) which is open at both ends Tube (6) contains a row of workpiece carriers (8) fitted with an O-ring seal at each end and pushed stepwide through tube (6) so they pass through he chamber. Each carrier (8) forms a sealed compartment contg. a holder for the workpieces. Each carrier (8) also has a hole, so the compartment is exposed to the atmos. in the chamber, which is perf. fitted with a vacuum pump. Tube (6) is pref. fitted with a vacuum pipe for the preliminary evacuation of each carrier (8) before the latter enters the chamber. After leaving the chamber, each carier is pref. used to aid the preliminary evacuation of another carrier which has not yet reached the chamber. System achieves continuous rapid evacuation of compartments (8) for all types of processes.
