Abstract

PURPOSE: To dispense with one device for welding objects of different sizes by vacuum sealing the parts on the opposite side of local vacuum vessels by means of freely deformable balloonlike objects, in electron beam welding of long-sided or large- sized structures.
CONSTITUTION: The areas near the weld zone of welding objects 1 are covered with local vacuum vessels 2, and are sealed airtight by vacuumshielding packings 4. Flexible vacuum holding balloons 10 are put in the opposite side parts of the vessels 2, and pressure of gas or liquid is applied to the balloons 10 to allow the balloons to closely contact the wall surfaces of the objects 1, so that the inner side thereof can be maintained in a vacuum. Electron beam welding is next accomplished by the electron beam 5 from an electron gun chamber 3. According to this method, the vacuum sealing of the rear side parts in the local vacuum welding is accomplished easily.
