Abstract

Process comprises (a) mixing an aq. plastics dispersion with an aq. dispersion of electrically conductive particles; (b) applying the mixt. in a thin layer to a substrate and (c) evaporating off the water at a temp. of at above the softening point of the plastic. Suitable plastics dispersions are e.g., (thermosetting) acrylic dispersions and polyisobutylene dispersions. The aq. dispersion of conductive particles may be e.g., of particulate noble metals or substances coated with noble metals, e.g., other metals, or carbon e.g., in the form of carbon black or graphite. Mixing of aq. dispersions of the components allows the prodn. of prods. contg. >=25wt.%, esp. 30-40wt.% carbon black etc., without using hazardous organic solvents. It is not possible to incorporate such large amts. of conductive particles by straight mixing of the components. The conductive particles form a coating on the plastics particles, so that the properties of the plastic material are not impaired. Prods. are useful for making conductive conveyor belts, stamped parts such as sealing rings, tans, etc.
