Abstract

A positive yarn feed device for knitting machines has a metering drum of variable dia. consisting of a flexible sheet held in a cylindrical form by means of circular grooves formed in the facing sides of two end discs into which the edges of the flexible sheet are fitted. The grooves may be either in the form of a series of concentric circles of various dias., or of a single, spiral groove in each disc, with a sepn. of 0.3-0.5 mm. between adjacent turns. A yarns guide comprising a fixed post, parallel to the axis of the metering drum, has an initial part inclined w.r.t. the axis of the drum and second part parallel to the axis to ensure a constant spacing of the yarn windings and a smooth progression down the drum surface. The device allows the yarn delivery speed to be easily altered, increasing machine versatility. It is relatively cheap and simple to construct, and has minimal mass in the rotating parts, giving high reliability and hence consistently high quality of the knitted goods, thus increasing machine productivity.
