Abstract

In a continuous casting process where a molten metal is drawn through an open ended mould in the form of a continuous slab, a specific portion of the continuously moving slab which is passing through a second cooling station and still includes an unsolidified metal in the inner layer thereof, is subjected to a magnetic field which cooperates with an electric current conducted to the slab and produces agitation force on the fluid metal as it solidifies, thus avoiding centre porosity. The magnetic field comprises a series of alternately-directed loop flux regions which produce a number of counter flows along the width of the unsolidified metal band, thus assuring uniform compsn. across the width of the slab.
