Abstract

1306755 Continuous casting SOC CIVILE D'ETUDES DE CENTRIFUGATION 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 25703/71 Heading B3F Ferromagnetic metal, such as NiCr or NiCrMo steel, is continuously cast in a vertical mould 3, which is rotated about its vertical axis together with the casting 4, 5 and possibly also with withdrawing and cutting means while in at least one region of the solidifying casting, stationary or rated inductors, 7, 9 create electromagnetic fields to cause circulation of the molten core 5 in vertical planes. The circulation counteracts the effect of centripetal action which collects inclusions at the casting axis. Preferably the circulation is such that the flow is downward at the axis of the casting and upward along the inner surface of the solid shell 4 as indicated in Fig. 2. The casting is guided and extracted by rollers. Each inductor 7 or 9 comprises insulating plates 14-17, Fig. 2, between which are currentcarrying bars of up to five turns surrounding the casting 4, 5. As shown there are single-turn copper bars 11-13 with apertures for water spray nozzles 19. Each bar is connected to a phase of a polyphase supply for a current flow of 2,000-10,000 amps, at low voltage and a frequency less than 100 cps. Each bar may be connected in series with the corresponding bar of the other inductor.
