Abstract

The sonar is mounted in a vehicle movable above the sea bed and can measure its speed in a first direction. It has at least one transducer with a main lobe inclined to a perpendicular in an orthogonal plane to the first direction, and a perpendicular to its side lobe. The transducers (7, 9, 10) emit and receive acoustic waves of two different frequencies. Echograms of the sea bed on the sides of the first direction are produced from the received echoes, and the depth is measured by the side lobes. The speed is derived from the acoustic wave frequency of the main lobe received by a transducer.
