Abstract

1329829 Sonar systems EMI Ltd 16 Nov 1970 [26 Nov 1969] 57754/69 Heading H4D A sonar system in which a transmitter radiates acoustic energy to impinge on rectangular strips on a submerged surface, has a receiving transducer positioned adjacent the surface opposite a longer side of the strip, to receive reflected energy. A dredger 2 has a hull mounted transducer 1 transmitting a beam which is narrow along the ship's fore-aft axis. An azimuth scanning receiving transducer 5 mounted on a suction dredge 4 hauled by the dredger thus receives scattered energy from a narrow strip of the sea-bed. The small ratio of receiver maximum-minimum echo times to transmitterseabed effective echo time is stated to enable a higher transmitter p.r.f. than if the receiver were also hull mounted. The echo signals are returned to the dredger to detect ridges 9 which often precede channels 8 filled with material 11 which could clog the dredge 4. Alternatively, the transmitter may be scanned and an omnidirectional receiver used.
