Abstract

A new metallic deriv. comprises >=1 Ni deriv. (A), partic. an oxide, and >=1 dehydrogenation agent (B), partic. a metallic oxide. It also pref. includes >=1 refractory metal deriv. (C), partic. an oxide. (B) is pref. Cr2O3, Fe2O3 or V2O5. (C) is pref. alumina, partic. amorphous alumina. The derivs. can be prepd. by treating aq. solns. contg. the required metallic cations in the form of salts with a current of NH3 to form a complex. NH3 is then removed to give a ppte contg. the derivs. sought for. The derivs. are used as catalysts in the prepn. of nitriles (which can be subsequently polymerised) by ammoxidation of alkanes using NO, at 450-490, pref. around 480 degrees C with a contact time between the catalyst and the reactive gases >0.2 second. The derivs. posses catalytic properties which are stable over a long period. Satd. and unsatd. nitriles can be obtd. from alkanes in a single step. Premature polymerization and explosion risks are avoided.
