Abstract

Catalyst for treating heavy oil for removing heavy metals from the oil and/or decomposing the heavy oil comprises a fired substance obtd. by firing a natural ore contg. nickel at 900-1200 degrees C. Catalyst has excellent strength and selectivity. For removing heavy metals from heavy oil and/or decomposing heavy oil, the catalyst is contacted with heavy oil for several secs. to several mins. at 350-550 degrees C under normal pressure or slightly higher pressure. The ratio of the catalyst to heavy oil is pref. 1-15:1. In an example, silicate type nickel ore contg. Ni 2.9% Fe 13.4%, MgO 29.8%, SiO2 38.5% and Al2O3 1.9% was finely pulverised, granulated into granules of 200 mu, and fired at 1000 degrees C for 3 hrs. Kuwait's reduced pressure light oil of s.g. 0.8859 (15/4 degrees C) was passed through a reaction tube filled with the fired catalyst under the conditions of WHSV 2, reaction temp. 500 degrees C and 5 min. The yield of gasoline was 18.4 wt.% and the yield of coke 10.3 wt.% (selectivity 0.64).
