Abstract

Conjugated diolefines are produced by reacting a mono-olefine at an elevated temperature with oxygen over a catalyst comprising (1) a mixture of the oxides of phosphorus and bismuth and an oxide of at least one of the metals iron, cobalt and nickel and/or (2) a compound of oxygen, phosphorus and bismuth in admixture with a compound of oxygen, phosphorus and at least one of the metals iron, cobalt and nickel, e.g. bismuth and iron phosphates. The catalysts may be deposited on supports. A gaseous diluent may be employed when proportions specified are 1-25% by volume mono-olefine and 1-21% by volume oxygen. Diluents specified are nitrogen and/or steam, peraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons. Mono-olefines specified are butene 1 and 2, 2-methyl butene 1 and 2 and 3-methyl butene 1.ALSO:Catalysts for the conversion of mono-olefines to conjugated di-olefines are (1) a mixture of the oxides of phosphorus and bismuth and an oxide of at least one of the metals iron, cobalt and nickel and/or (2) a compound of oxygen, phosphorus and bismuth in admixture with a compound of oxygen, phosphorus and at least one of the metals iron, cobalt and nickel, e.g. bismuth and iron phosphates. The examples describe adding phosphoric acid to a dilute nitric acid solution of bismuth and ferric, cobalt or nickel nitrate which is then evaporated to dryness and heated at 600 DEG C. for 16 hours. The catalysts may be deposited on carriers, e.g. silica, alumina or diatomaceous earth.
